Why Our Brain Needs to Create Art
How does it affect the brain?
It has an impact on the brain wave patterns and emotions, the nervous system, and can actually raise serotonin levels... Research has proven the arts develop neural systems that produce a broad spectrum of benefits ranging from fine motor skills to creativity and improved emotional balance.
There is an increasing amount of scientific evidence that proves art enhances brain function. Art can change a persons outlook and the way they experience the world. Creating art can help you acknowledge and recognize feelings that have been lurking in your subconscious. Research has also shown that creating visual art can reduce stress and promote relaxation in people who are hospitalized or homebound.
What if I'm not creative?
Creativity is like a muscle and it needs to be exercised just as any other muscle in your body. This doesn't mean going out and buying the biggest canvas and brush money can buy. But maybe start small, with a challenge of some sort. Try sketching your favorite animal, or maybe customizing an old t-shirt. You may be pleasantly surprised at the outcome of these exercises!
